Local vs Foreign Degree Comparator

Study in Pakistan or abroad? Compare one local option with up to three foreign ones on total cost, money needed to get in, work rights after graduation, payback, ROI and risk, using three realistic paths for each country.

Data last updated 3 November 2026 · 333 figures, 316 marked "Estimate" until confirmed

How to read the comparison

Each foreign option is shown as the probability-weighted average of three paths: you return to Pakistan with a foreign-degree salary premium, you stay and work abroad (using the post-study work route), or things do not work out and you return without a premium after a longer job search. Change the probabilities to match your situation. Badges show which option wins on cost, payback, 10-year ROI and risk; the priority selector re-ranks the options for what matters most to you.

How it works and methodology

Every option uses the same engine as the Degree Cost & Payback Calculator. Costs include tuition, living, visa and health charges, insurance and return flights. "Money to get in" is the proof of funds a visa officer expects (living costs, plus first-year tuition where required) together with visa fees and the flight.

For the "stay abroad" path we subtract the extra cost of living abroad compared with Pakistan, so salaries are compared fairly. Countries without a general post-study work visa start with a low chance of staying. Rules change often, so every country shows its rules, the date they were checked and a link to the official page.

Frequently asked questions

Is studying abroad worth it compared with Pakistan?

It depends on the field, the country, scholarships and whether you can work there after graduating. The comparator shows each option's cost, payback and risk side by side, so you can see when a foreign degree pays back and when a local one is the safer choice.

What are the three paths?

Return to Pakistan with a salary premium for the foreign degree; stay abroad and work after graduating; or not finding work and returning early. You can change the chance of each path.

How much money do I need to show for a student visa?

It depends on the country. The "money to get in" meter adds the proof of funds, first-year tuition where required, visa fees and the flight, and compares the total with your savings. Each country links to its official requirement.

How up to date are the visa rules?

Each rule shows the date it was last checked and a link to the official page. Rules marked Estimate or Changing should be confirmed on that page before you rely on them.

Why is the foreign salary reduced in the stay-abroad path?

Because living abroad costs more. We subtract the difference between living costs abroad and in Pakistan, so the comparison reflects what you can actually save, not just the headline salary.
